I have a wonderful friend Maria, who is always happy to share her island cottage with me. It's painted butter yellow and is nestled in the bend of the road that runs beside the lake. We went up last Saturday with the goal of doing the usual cottagey things which is basically as little as possible! (Actually Maria did a fair amount of weeding but she was kind enough to shoo me away whenever I offered to help). I always have the goal of photographing but that's just like breathing - not actual work. As this is the beginning of the season the car was packed to the roof with food and supplies and every now and then we got a whiff of the luscious Lemon Sour Cream Pound Cake that my grandson Jorel and I had made. We could already tell (or smell) that it was going to be a great weekend.
Maria and I both like to cook so that's a big part of our cottage experience. If my daughter-in-law Mei had been there she would have snapped many pix of our delectable dishes but I usually dive in before thinking of taking any shots and by the time I remember it's too late. Mei took lots of photos of Jorel & I making the Pound Cake so I've included a couple. If you're interested in the recipe click here - it's a really yummy cake!

In the afternoon our friend Martin arrived with his dog Gumboots, an old playmate of Maria's dog Beau. The two have romped together for years but now they spend most of their days snoozing in the sun or standing guard against the possibility of villainous intruders. That evening Maria and I whipped up a scrumptious dinner and then we all sat in the screened-in porch sipping wine and chatting while sheet lightning danced from cloud to cloud. We had the radio turned way up and when I heard a Lighthouse song my day was gloriously complete!
Sunday the weather was rather iffy but I love that silvery light and thought I might get some nice shots. As I rounded the bend I saw that each side of the road presented two completely different scenes. To my right, the sky and lake shone like burnished pewter with just a smudge of a line to mark the horizon. On my left the fields were bursting with the greens and yellows you only see in the spring - the colours so bright they made me squint!
Monday morning the sky was still threatening so we decided to leave early and meet Mei for Dim Sum at the Ambassador, one of our favourite spots off Highway 7. The ferry was scheduled to leave at 12:15 - it seemed like plenty of time - but with one thing and another we arrived at the dock just in time to see the boat heading out. Fortunately it's a short run and while we waited I took some shots. These two photos show how quickly the light changes and what a contrast in mood it creates.
When the ferry returned we were first in line and as the boat plowed through the water giant waves washed over our windshield. I can never resist 'through a window' water shots and this one had the dancey feel I was looking for.
Dim Sum was wonderful. I didn't take any pictures of course. We left with that lovely too full feeling. It was all so satisfying and I can't wait to do it again!!
