Street Seen
My passion for photography began as a teenager but I became committed to defining myself as a photographer in 1996 when I was given an early model of a digital camera to experiment with. The immediacy and creativity of digital imaging was a perfect match for my artistic expression and I jumped headfirst into the then murky waters of digital photography.
The technology enables me to take hundreds of photos without needing to reload film and this suits my style of working quickly and intuitively. I love to wander the streets without any route in mind, shooting as I walk or even as I drive by. If "all the world's a stage", then my viewfinder is the proscenium arch. Unlike the theatre, my actors and sets take no direction from me. I aim to be invisible, capturing the scenes as the light, shadow, texture and forms inspire me.
I took these photographs while walking in Bejing and Montreal. They were all hand-held and shot without set-ups. Their unifying characteristic is a use of saturated colour with images strongly defined by vertical and horizontal lines giving them a graphic crispness.
